Descriptive Writings
Child Soldiers
Written by Seung Soo Chae (Joseph)
They enter the battlefield
one by one
with hands that held toys
but with hands that holds AK-47s
They kill each other to gain hold
of something that never helps
Their only treatment are drugs
As their head is wrapped in dirt rugs
With one command of an adult
they fire into the air to kill
The soldiers have no laws
They invade towns with no consent
They are innocent
They are not free
They fight for nothing
They are young
They are children
They are child soldiers

About the main character
By: Simon Nam
Ishmael Beah who is the main character of the story faces many challenging situations in the story. The story was illustrated from his point of view of the events caused by the war. He was born in a small village located in the southern part of Sierra Leone. He and his brother liked the foreign rap music culture and enjoyed dancing to it. As the story flows, many of his past memories with his family members and friends were brought to him as he faces new challenges.
At the age of twelve, he became a victim of the war. He saw an unpleasant view of the people in his village getting shot and killed by the rebels. After that, he realized that he could be also killed and face the death easily. He starts to gain different kinds of feelings in his mind, mostly the fear. As he starts to move further away from his hometown, he gains more feelings of fear and concerns more about his family members whether if they are alive. When he was captured by the rebels for the first time, he was totally shocked and terrified after he saw many innocent people including boys at his age getting shot with tons of bullets. When he and his friends escaped, he felt fortunate and never wanted to face the rebels again.
Several days later, he had lost all of his friends including his brother, Junior. But he still had a strong courage to never give up on finding his rest of his family. He continued the journey on his own, but he started to become hopeless and exhausted while he was roaming in the forest searching for desperately for people. There were lots of events which have caused Ishmael to gain variety of feelings. Though, he have gained many life lessons through this situation and continued his survival journey.
